The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary — Advent 2017

Summary

Reflecting on The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary is a great way to prepare for Jesus’ coming this advent season. The mysteries take us to the path of Our Lady’s journey from the moment of her Fiat to God, to Jesus’ nativity up until Jesus entering his childhood.

Reflective Study Guide Questions

“The Rosary is a powerful weapon to put the demons to flight and to keep oneself from sin…If you desire peace in your hearts, in your homes, and in your country, assemble each evening to recite the Rosary. Let not even one day pass without saying it, no matter how burdened you may be with many cares and labors.”

Pope Pius XI
  • The first Joyful Mystery is the Annunciation. Reflect on Mary’s words: “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your word.” What is God asking of you this Advent? What is He asking you to say, “yes” to, and how are you showing Him that your answer is, “yes?”

  • The second Joyful Mystery is the Visitation. Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth, conceived a son in her old age — for nothing is impossible with God. Have you not brought to God the desires of your heart because you fear that they are impossible? Reflect on how anything is possible with Him. How can you seek out His will in regards to that desire of yours?

  • The third Joyful Mystery is the Nativity. When Jesus was born, He entered this world as a vulnerable and poor baby, and from this we can learn the lesson of detachment from earthly things. What are you attached to? How can you intentionally work on detaching yourself from those things this year?

  • The fourth Joyful Mystery is the Presentation. This is when Mary and Joseph take Jesus to Jerusalem, “to present him to the Lord.” This was in fulfillment with the Jewish law. Reflect on the virtue of obedience and how you can ask the Lord to help you grow in obedience this Advent.

  • The fifth Joyful Mystery is the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. Mary and Joseph had lost Jesus while setting out for Nazareth. They later found him in the temple and he responded, “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” Sometimes we look for things in places that we, on some level, know that they will not be… Where have you been looking for happiness, for holiness?
